Kingsport, Tennessee is in Sullivan County. Kingsport was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. It was first chartered in 1822 and became a major shipping port on the Holston River. The city was named after William King, who constructed a boat yard along the river. It was re-chartered in 1917 and was designed as a garden city by John Nolen of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The name "Kingsport" is a simplification of "King's Port", originally referring to the area on the Holston River known as King's Boat Yard, the head of navigation for the Tennessee Valley. It is the only city in the United States that has this name. Unfortunately, even a small town such as Kingsport can be struck by water and flood damage, fire damage, mold infestations and biohazards. There are many attractions to visit in Kingsport such as Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium which was established in 1971. Bays Mountain Park features a picturesque 44 acre lake, hiking trails, a Nature Center with a state-of-the-art Planetarium Theater, and Animal Habitats featuring wolves, bobcats, raptors and reptiles. The Allandale Mansion is another neat place to visit. The Allandale Mansion is located on 25 acres, it is a popular spot for weddings, private parties and business functions. Allandale Mansion was given to the City of Kingsport in 1969. Built in 1950 by Ruth and Harvey Brooks, Allandale still houses their fine furnishings. Once a 500 acre farm where Mr. Brooks raised his championship Black Angus cows and blue-ribbon walking horses, Allandale is now an exciting part of Kingsport’s civic and social life. The legendary Pal's Sudden Service opened Location No. 1 in downtown Kingsport in 1956 and now has 6 locations in Kingsport.
