The town had to give up its incorporation during the Great Depression when it could no longer fund municipal services. Byram is bordered to the north by the city of Jackson, the state capitol, and to the south by Terry. Byram officially became a city in 2009. The city is known for the historic Swinging Bridge, built in 1905, that served as the only access across the Pearl River at Byram. This small city is home to Marcus Spriggs, former NFL offensive guard, as well as Ishmon Bracey, Delta blues guitarist. Byram is beginning to grow rapidly becoming an affluent area of Hinds County.
