Gladewater Texas is a great place for exploring East Texas history, and is known for its large number of antique stores, antique malls, and festivals. The town’s name probably originated from its proximity to Glade Creek, a stream that rose in a rather barren region called the Glades. The Texas Legislature proclaimed Gladewater the "Antique Capital of East Texas”.

On April 7, 1931, the first Gladewater oil well blew. It was located one mile outside town in the Sabine River bottom. Oil production led to a population increase during the 1930s from about 500 persons to around 8,000.

During the 1970’s, the Gladewater Historical Society began collecting articles and preparing to publish the history of Gladewater. Two books, Gladewater, Texas 1873-1973 and Gladewater, Texas Bicentennial Edition 1976, told the story of Gladewater and the courageous families who settled the area. Many of the exhibits in the museum are based on the information and pictures found in these books.

The Gladewater Historical Society was chartered as a non-profit educational association in 1987 to preserve and interpret the history of the Gladewater area. At this time, the large floor-to-ceiling cabinets that are now used for exhibit space were purchased. The story is told that these cabinets were installed in Day Drug during the 1920’s.

The Gladewater Museum is now located in the building known as the Ellen Bauman Community Building. It was built in 1939 during the Art Deco Period. Doc Shepperd was the Gregg County Commissioner at the time of the building’s completion. The building was used for county offices and a library downstairs. The second floor was used by various community organizations for meetings and social gatherings.

Our insurance suggested ServePro for pack-out and restoration of our home after plumbing failure flooded our home. I am working with Jerry Ivenson and David Rios for the restoration part and that is not yet underway, but the "pack-out" is done and I am quite impressed with the team who boxed and prepped our belongings. Nef, Sandra and Alexa came yesterday and did an amazing job prepping and boxing our things. They used quality wraps and blankets and moved heavy furniture with ease. The photos are of the work the three women accomplished in just 6 hours. Today, they returned and finished the prep work. Brandon and UT arrived later and began the heavy lifting. By 4:00 they had everything out of here except for the water-damaged furniture that had to stay behind. Now the restoration work should begin and I'm hoping that goes as smoothly as this "pack-out" went. I'll be back to give a separate review on that.
