Mr. Alan Ballentine moved his family to rural South Carolina to farm in the 1850s. In the 1890s the railroad came through the Ballentine property at a stop known as the Ballentine's Mill - later known as Ballentine. The town sprang up around the railroad, as a number of families laid roots in the area. They created an area rich with history, a close-knit community and a remarkable small town feel.

The Ballentine area does not typically experience heavy rainfalls or flooding as it is far enough from both rivers and Lake Murray.
