History of Longport

The history of Longport, New Jersey is a long and proud one. Longport, New Jersey was settled in 1677 by Scots-Irish settlers from New York. A branch of the Morris Canal was built through the town in 1839 and opened to shipping in 1855. The port was established in 1885, when shipbuilding began in earnest on what came to be known as St. Jones Hook. The town became a shipbuilding center and commercial hub with ships traveling all over the world to trade goods.
