Almo Cleanup and Restoration

Almo is a small, unincorporated community in northern Calloway County, Kentucky, known for its quiet rural setting, strong agricultural roots, and close proximity to Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Located just north of Murray along U.S. Highway 641, Almo offers residents a peaceful lifestyle while providing easy access to shopping, healthcare, and education in nearby Murray.

Although the exact date of Almo's founding is unknown, the community began to grow in the early 1890s when the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway established a rail center in the area. A post office originally named Buena opened in 1891 before being renamed Almo in 1892. Historians believe the name may have been inspired by "Alamo," shortened by railroad workers or postal officials. While the local post office closed in 2022, the community continues to thrive as a residential and farming area.

Agriculture has long been the backbone of Almo's economy. The surrounding countryside is home to family farms producing corn, soybeans, wheat, tobacco, and livestock. Many residents also commute to Murray or neighboring communities for employment in education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and tourism. The community is served by the Dexter-Almo Heights Water District, which has expanded its infrastructure over the decades to support continued residential growth.

Outdoor recreation is one of Almo's greatest attractions. Kentucky Lake, Kenlake State Resort Park, and the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area are only a short drive away, providing opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, and hunting throughout the year. These recreational destinations also help support tourism in the surrounding area.

Residents enjoy a close-knit community atmosphere where neighbors know one another and local churches, schools, and community events play an important role in everyday life. Students in Almo are served by the Calloway County School District, one of the region's well-regarded public school systems.
